lyrics

GJHS
(J. Ward SOCAN, J. McDonald SOCAN)

About: People say taking down a statue erases history, but if that statue was preserving history for 80 years, how come they don't know what he did?

They say it should stand as a reminder, but does everyone need reminding?
Who can never forget?

They say you can't judge history by today's standards, but who condoned slaughter at the time? The people dying? How do you think they judged it? Were they unfair?

Are white people just afraid to acknowledge our responsibility to make amends?

Annoy, distress, take & destroy

Genocide Junior High
Genocide Junior High, say goodbye
I went to Genocide Junior High

When I say I'm from
Nova Scotia, that's occupied Mi'kmaqi
Where people scoff at history and only speak it softly
I lived across the street from a big yellow building
Where we would go to learn the way things were as little children
With glowing hearts, they filled them with a patriotic fervour
If they'd be honest, furthermore, they would call it murder
The big yellow building on its face bore an important date
Two hundred years after seventeen forty-eight
When Edward Cornwallis came ashore, disgraced, and swore to make
A formidable stake to enrich the British Board of Trade
The Lord of Halifax put him in charge of the port that bore his name
And from there the law starts to distort and change
He spoke sweetly supposedly, but openly broke treaties
No person in his place had been so beastly so frequently
No thanks given, so call off banquets
From bounties on scalps to the smallpox blankets

Genocide Junior High
Genocide Junior High, say goodbye
I went to Genocide Junior High

October ‘49 he declined to declare war
He didn't see the Mi'kmaq as a nation, and therefore
The solution that he sought to their persistence was chilling
Ten guineas a scalp; men, women and children.
The settlers set after the bounty so wantonly
Within a year, the policy bankrupted the colony.
The injustice was just as foul as it sounds
They paid out hundreds of thousands of pounds.
This not a trick of latter day morals and politics
Even British officials at the time called it sick
In fact, they called it terrorism. It was terrible
Condemning children to die to scare adults
No part of the British command was innocent
The crown expressed misgivings and distaste but still permitted it
My entire culture takes up space that's illegitimate
And acts like it's none of our business - isn't it??

Genocide Junior High
Genocide Junior High, say goodbye
I went to Genocide Junior High

Take the monuments and statues down
Take the monuments and statues down

I'm glad there's a charter of rights and immigration
But who are we to celebrate confederation before there's reparations?
Let alone truth and reconciliation
No justice is taking place in the absence of restoration
The reputation of a nation is complacence
It benefits white supremacists, this tolerance and patience
The politics of waiting, consolidating, and taking up space
The city's waking up late.

Take the monuments and statues down
Take the monuments and statues down
